Dwyer 0-10 CFH meter for finding TDC
very many years ago , a local oil field guy
gave me a Dwyer 0-to-10 Cubic Feet an Hour Meter
thinking i might be able to use this for something ????
What i came up was a very easy method of finding TDC
on race engines without having to use a piston TDC-stop
With the Dwyer 0-10 CFH meter , its extremely sensitive to
air pressure .
Use a spark plug fitting and screw into cylinder head
plug's hole , then attach about a 1 Foot rubber hose to plug fitting and Dwyer Meter .....then with a fully degreed or partially degreed harmonic balancer or degree wheel,
turn over engine with breaker bar or 1/2 inch ratchet
a little at a time till you see the ball start pegging inside the Meter .....keep going till you get close to TDC
and then just strart "Bumping" wrench with small taps ...
have someone hold Meter at 45 deg angle while you look at ball movement ...when you get true TDC the ball will stop ..Note this location on timing tag or affix a TDC pointer ..then go past TDC and try bumping backwards towards TDC from other side of TDC again till ball stops moving , note location , with car and a little patience its very simple and easy to find TDC !!
i could have found TDC on a real engine quicker than it took to type this out !!!filter :)
its very much easier and simpler to do than explain !!
Anyways , i use this to DOUBLE-Check out racing customers who use my dyno ...every once in awhile i find TDC-Pointers that are OFF the zero mark or not properly located !!
Sometimes you get an engine on the dyno that seems to need a lot or very little ignition timing ...thats when i suspect TDC tab location is incorrect .
Sometimes the racer fogets to find real TDC or has purchased the wrong tab for the balancer !!
